Many first-time mothers mistakenly believe that their belly will be flat again immediately after giving birth. However, the truth is that the abdominal wall is still protruding a few days after giving birth. This is completely normal and natural, as the uterus needs time to contract.

When a woman lacks this information, she is often frightened by her postpartum body. She doesn’t like her belly, doesn’t accept it, and doesn’t want to touch it. However, this attitude hinders the natural healing process. Our role as physical therapists is to be here for you and help you reconnect with your body. We want to encourage you to take loving care of yourself and support the recovery process.

After a vaginal delivery, it is very beneficial to lie on your stomach, especially during the first 48 hours. Once your breasts begin to fill with milk, this position may no longer be as comfortable. Lying on your stomach helps stabilize the abdominal wall, promotes uterine contraction, and speeds up recovery. We recommend this position 3 times a day for 15–20 minutes.

Touch your postpartum belly. For the first few days, a gentle touch or stroking is enough. Gradually, you can apply more pressure and massage your belly from the pubic bone upward toward your ribs, as well as from the sides toward the center, toward your belly button. This will help your abdominal receptors begin to contract. This method also helps close diastasis. Diastasis is the separation of the rectus abdominis muscles, which occurs naturally during pregnancy. Diastasis is still present during the postpartum period, but it should heal spontaneously by the end of this period. If this does not happen, it is advisable to inform your doctor and consult a physical therapist.

If possible, try to breastfeed while lying down or in a semi-seated position with your back propped up.

Always get out of bed by rolling onto your side, and try to avoid lifting heavy objects for the first few days. Your partner can definitely carry the car seat with the baby!

You can also support recovery by breathing consciously through your diaphragm all the way down to your pelvic area. As you exhale, try to draw in your pelvic floor and also contract your abdominal wall. These conscious, repeated contractions will help your abdominal wall tighten more quickly and help your pelvic floor recover.

Remember that you are amazing, and taking care of yourself is very important. Take your time and be kind to yourself during this beautiful but challenging time.

-Rest, nutrition, rehydration, lying on the stomach, breastfeeding while lying on one’s side, getting up from a side-lying position, urinating in the shower, conscious breathing, and gentle isometric muscle contractions- Dear Moms, we understand that concerns about the appearance of your belly often arise after giving birth.
